Where teens build confidence, connection, and resilience
Together, Outside Perspectives and Torrington Youth Service Bureau create a space where teens can step outside their comfort zones, support each other, and grow together.
What Participants Do
Participants move through a series of outdoor-based programs designed to gradually build trust, confidence, and leadership.
Workshops
Small-group, after-school sessions that focus on communication, teamwork, and reflection.
Day Adventures
Outdoor experiences such as;
- hiking in local parks
- rock climbing
- challenge courses
- canoeing on local rivers and lakes
Overnight adventure
The program culminates with an overnight canoe and camping trip. Participants apply the leadership, teamwork, and resilience they’ve developed throughout the year.
Who This is For
Participants are typically identified and invited by TYSB staff based on their interest and potential benefit from this experience.
Participants come from Torrington, Harwinton, and Winchester and represent a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
Teens who:
- are ages 13-17
- live in Torrington & surrounding areas
- willing to participate and try new things!
Teens benefit from:
- Stronger peer connections
- Positive experiences outside of school
- Opportunities to build confidence and leadership
- Support developing communication and social-emotional skills
While the program takes place outdoors, no prior experience is required.
Why This Program
Many teens today are navigating isolation, stress, and a growing amount of time spent online.
This program intentionally creates space to build real-world relationships, navigate challenges together, and experience belonging in a group.
The program provides:
- highly-trained, experienced OP instructors
- small cohort + year-long program
- experienced and knowledgeable TYSB mentor
- all necessary gear (including clothing + shoes if needed)
- transportation to and from the program
- snacks at workshops, meals on day programs + overnight

About the Partners
Outside Perspectives
Outside Perspectives (OP) is a Connecticut nonprofit that partners with community organizations to create consistent, screen-free outdoor programs where groups strengthen relationships, practice leadership, and build the skills to contribute to their communities.
Since 2015, Outside Perspectives has served hundreds of youth across Connecticut through outdoor and partnership-based programming.
Torrington Youth Service Bureau
The Torrington Area Youth Service Bureau (TYSB) seeks to:
- Provide programs that address the needs of youth and their families.
- Develop and implement educational/social activities that prevent delinquency.
- Strengthen families.
- Coordinate special projects that promote positive youth development.
