About Outside Perspectives
We create spaces where young people grow through challenge, connection, and belonging.
Our Mission
Cultivate lasting personal growth and positive community engagement through transformative outdoor experiences.
Our Vision
All young people are engaged in healthy communities that encourage their full potential.
Why growth happens here
Young people do not grow because it is what is expected. They grow when they feel known, challenged, and supported by people who believe in them.
That belief shapes everything we do.
We create outdoor experiences where trust can build, confidence can take root, and young people can begin to see themselves differently.

Why the outdoors?
The outdoors asks something real of people.
It asks patience, teamwork, responsibility, and courage. It gives fewer places to hide and more room to grow.
Away from screens, pressure, routine, young people have space to move, solve problems, contribute to a group, and discover what they are capable of.
A trail, a fire, a paddle, a shared challenge – these moments often open doors that classrooms and conversations alone cannot.

Our Story
Outside Perspectives began in a basement.
Nicky Wood and her best friend Shannon Zich started by leading guided expeditions for a small number of partners.
Gear was washed in a home washer and dryer. Meals and logistics were prepared in the kitchen. Every trip was built with hard work, borrowed space, and a deep belief in what young people need.
From the beginning, the goal was never to offer one-off adventures.
It was to create experiences that brought a group of. young people together and kept them together long enough to grow.
Today, that same belief lives on through partnerships across Connecticut.

Our Journey of Growth
We use outdoor experiences as a path for deeper growth. Through our Journey of Growth, young people are invited to:
Venture
Try something new. Step outside your comfort zone.
Reflect
Learn from challenge and recognize your own growth.
Connect
Build trust, teamwork, and healthy relationships.
Lead
Contribute, take ownership, and help others grow.
Growth looks different for everyone. Our job is to create the conditions where it can happen.
Built for Partnership
We work alongside schools, youth service bureaus, and community organizations across Connecticut.
They know their young people. We bring outdoor experience, structure, staff, and a framework for growth.
The best programs are not dropped in from the outside. They are built together.
We serve organizations primarily in Connecticut and are open to discussing partnerships in Western MA.

Our Core Values

Inclusion
The outdoors should feel open to everyone. We work to widen the path.

Accessibility
Connection to nature should not depend on money, confidence, or circumstance.

Lasting Relationships
One good trip can matter. Ongoing support matters more.

Community
Young people thrive where they are welcomed, need, and known.

Stewardship
Wild places deserve care. We teach respect by practicing it.

Commitment
Growth asks something of all of us. We believe in showing up.
Meet the people behind the experience
The people behind this work are guides, mentors, educators, and builders of community.
They carry gear, solve problems, lead trips, hold standards, and keep showing up for young people.
That consistency matters.
